For the first time Walmart US participated the 3rd Annual 2013 CandidateExperience Awards (aka CandE Awards) run by "The Talent Board" a 3rd party non-profit whose purpose is to promote the improvement of the candidate experience through awareness, research, communicating best practices and their annual Candidate Experience competition. The 2013 Awards competition involved 138 North American Employers and over 46,000 applicants. In October 2013, at the HR Tech Conference in Los Vegas, the 64 Award Winners were recognized which included Walmart, Accenture, Capital One, Deloitte, GM, Intel, PepsiCo, Hersey, BASF, etc. The competition involved three rounds of assessment: 1) survey of the employer's recruitment process as it involved the candidate experience 2) comprehensive survey of employer's applicants 3) a panel interview with the employer.
Why did Walmart US participate? Although the CandE Awards is a
competition, it exists to enable any company to benchmark and improve
their candidate experience. The benefits of Walmart US participating,
regardless of our level of candidate experience sophistication: 1)
receive valuable survey data from our own applicants (Walmart US asked
4,000 US management GRS applicants to complete the 64 question survey)
2) Benchmarking data against the aggregate data of all other
participating employers.
The results from the 2013 survey, received in December 2013 provided
invaluable data and insights into many areas of the Walmart US recruiting process
that have never been measured. The data from the survey covered six areas:
pre-application (becoming aware of and researching the job opportunity), the
application process, the interview, the verification and offer, not selected
(experience after being disqualified) and withdrew (reasons for withdrawing).
Insights:
1) Candidates
are customers: Especially for
Walmart. As the world’s largest private employer and largest retailer; our candidates,
like no other employer, have a higher propensity to also be our customers as
shown by the survey results: 72.9% of our candidates have a previous
relationship with Walmart at time of application.
2) Candidates
invest large amounts of time researching employers and jobs: 32.6% of Walmart applicants spend 5 or more
hours researching the company and the specific job opportunities prior to
applying. 21.4% spent 3 to 4 hours.
3)
Candidates are Social Media Savvy: Startware was the 2nd highest
social media sites used.
4) Candidates
want to see Diversity information:
